The St. Louis Cardinals finish what has been a nightmare week when they take on the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon in the finale of a three-game series.
The Redbirds suffered their fifth straight defeat last night, blowing a 6-1 lead on their way to a 9-8 loss in 10 innings. The Brewers clinched a playoff berth yesterday and lead the Phillies by 2 games for the best record in MLB.
Mikolas In Milwaukee
Miles Mikolas looks to continue his strong run when he toes the slab this afternoon. The right-hander has been excellent over his last three starts, pitching 16 innings and allowing just 4 runs on 13 hits with 3 walks (2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP).
Mikolas has done well against the Brewers in his career, going 10-7 with a 3.82 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 20 games. He is still hard to trust today though with his 6.54 road ERA.
Quintana To The Mound
It’ll be a matchup of veterans in this one with left-hander Jose Quintana pitching for Milwaukee. The former Cardinal has hit a bit of a rough patch, posting a 7.56 ERA in his last three starts while seeing his season ERA rise from 3.32 to 3.88 during that span.
Look out for William Contreras today. The Brewers catcher has crushed the Cardinals in his career with a .305 average, .394 OBP, and .858 OPS. Contreras is also hitting .438 in 16 career at-bats against Mikolas.
My Pick
These Brewers are something else. They are relentless and never feel like they are out of a game, and I think their approach will serve them well against a pitch-to-contact hurler like Mikolas.
The Cardinals are fading fast, and I think we need to keep picking against them until they snap this streak. I don’t recommend laying -182 on the moneyline, but I’m good with the -1 at -134.
