The St. Louis Cardinals look to cool off the red-hot San Francisco Giants when the teams play the second of their three-game series tonight at Busch Stadium.
The Giants have now won 11 of their last 12 games while averaging 7.83 runs per game during that span.
Pallante Fading
Andre Pallante has been struggling mightily lately, and he’ll hope to get back on track tonight. Pallante had a respectable 4.10 ERA on July 9th, but since then, he has been crushed to the tune of a 7.79 ERA in his last 10 starts.
The Cardinals have fallen out of the playoff race in part because they have failed to address the fact that Pallante has faded here in the second half. The Redbirds are now 1-11 in Pallante’s last 12 starts.
Cards Face Verlander
The Cards will face future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander tonight. The 42-year-old’s numbers don’t look very impressive with a 3-10 record, 4.29 ERA, and 1.43 WHIP, but he has been performing well lately.
Over his last eight starts, Verlander has posted a 2.98 ERA while holding opponents to a .239 batting average and .635 OPS. He has also allowed no earned runs in four of those eight outings.
My Pick
Pallante is an automatic fade at this point at a good price, and I think we are getting a good price tonight on a surging Verlander and a San Francisco team playing its best baseball of the season.
As hot as the Giants’ bats are right now and with the Cardinals missing their most powerful bat in Willson Contreras due to his suspension, I wouldn’t dissuade you from taking some alternative lines at a bigger price. I’ll take the Giants -1.5 at +129.
