The big problem for Mikolas this season has been when he faces good teams like the Yankees. He has an 8.20 ERA in eight starts this season against teams currently in playoff position, and the Cards are 1-7 in those games.
Warren Solid For Yanks
The Yankees hope to earn the sweep today behind Will Warren. The right-hander has quietly been very solid for New York, as he’s given up 2 runs or less in eight of his last ten starts. Warren’s 4.34 ERA is due to improve as well, as he carries a 4.00 xERA, 3.68 FIP, and 3.60 xFIP.
One thing in the Cardinals’ favor is Warren has struggled on the road with a 6.48 ERA this season.
My Pick
While Warren has had some troubles on the road, he is backed by an offense that has found its groove again after hitting a bit of a rough patch. The Yankees are having a very good week with a record of 4-1 and an average of 6.4 runs scored per game.
I just think this is a nightmare matchup for Mikolas. It’s another blazing hot day today in St. Louis where the ball should carry, and the numbers don’t lie - he has been absolutely dreadful against teams that would make the playoffs if the season ended today.
The Cardinals are beat up physically right now, and I think they get pummeled again on the scoreboard today too.
