Cards Look To Get Back Even
The St. Louis Cardinals look to get back to .500 when they meet the New York Yankees tonight at Busch Stadium.
Despite losing last night to fall to 61-62, somehow the Redbirds still find themselves only 3.5 games behind the Mets for the final NL Wild Card spot. The Mets have dropped 14 of their last 16.
Gray Hopes To Keep Rolling
The Cards will face a left-handed starter tonight in New York’s Max Fried. They have struggled overall offensively since the All Star break, but most of those struggles have come against right-handers. The Cardinals have an .842 OPS against lefties since the break, which ranks 3rd in MLB during that stretch.
Sonny Gray will toe the slab tonight, as he looks to continue a dominant run. In his last two starts facing the Dodgers and Cubs, Gray has pitched 14 innings and allowed just 2 earned runs on 6 hits with 2 walks and 15 strikeouts.
Fried Struggling For Yanks
The big hit of last night’s game was a two-run homer by Jazz Chisholm Jr., and the long ball has been the Yankees’ friend this season. They have mashed 9 home runs while going 3-1 over their last four games, and they lead MLB with 192 round-trippers here in 2025.
Fried’s overall numbers look excellent, but he is in the midst of a pretty lengthy rough patch. In his 7 starts since the beginning of July, Fried has labored on his way to a 6.00 ERA.
My Pick
I think there is value on the Cardinals tonight at a plus money price. Gray’s season ERA sits at 4.06, and that still has room to come down with a 3.68 xERA, 3.11 FIP, and 2.94 xFIP. He also has done well against the Yankees in his career with a 3.38 ERA in 7 starts.
It has been a rough go for the Redbirds since the All Star break, but in their current form, they are definitely in their favorable split facing a left-hander tonight. And with Fried’s extended struggles and Gray getting on a roll, I think the Cardinals get back to .500 tonight.
Pick: Cardinals on the moneyline at +118 on DraftKings (bet to +110)
