CITY Back In Action
St. Louis CITY SC returns from a break to take on Nashville SC tonight at Energizer Park.
CITY’s last MLS game was a 2-1 loss to Minnesota on July 26th, and they followed that up with a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa from the English Premier League in a friendly on July 30th.
Optimism For CITY?
It has obviously been a nightmare season for CITY with just 2 wins in their last 20 games. However, there is hope to build some momentum down the stretch.
The break seemingly came at a good time for CITY, as they are now the healthiest they’ve been all season. Also their recent home performances have provided signs of encouragement. Their last three home games have included:
A 2-1 win over Portland
Being the much better team most of the game against Minnesota before a late penalty and red card turned a 1-0 win into a 2-1 loss
A highly-entertaining 2-1 loss to Aston Villa where CITY played an exciting style and created several great chances against an EPL team, albeit it in a friendly
Nashville Is Rolling
Nashville is enjoying a terrific season, as they reside in third place in the Eastern Conference with 47 points. Their +16 goal differential and 26 goals allowed are both tied for second-best in MLS.
Nashville has a record of 10W-2L-4D in their last 16 games, but they’ve dropped their last two matches on the road.
My Lean
I have a sneaking suspicion CITY plays one of their best games of the season tonight. It was around this time last year that CITY started playing much better soccer, as they finished the season with a record of 4W-3L-3D in their last 10 games. With the team being much healthier now, it would not stun me to see something similar here in 2025.
This doesn’t make my Saturday card because this team needs to have a “show me” game before I can invest in them, but my lean is for CITY to get a result and avoid a defeat here. Nashville is very good, but I think CITY rises to the challenge in this one.
