The St. Louis Cardinals (15-19) completed a day-night doubleheader sweep of the New York Mets (22-12) on Sunday at Busch Stadium, winning both games by a single run. Home runs from Willson Contreras and Alec Burleson, along with a strong relief outing from Michael McGreevy in Game 2, helped the Cardinals secure the series win.

Game 1: Cardinals 6, Mets 5

Game Summary

The Mets opened the scoring in the 1st with back-to-back doubles from Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo. Willson Contreras responded with a solo home run to right-center in the 2nd to tie it 1-1.

In the 3rd, Jesse Winker drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before Nolan Gorman grounded into a double play that allowed another runner to score, giving St. Louis a 3-1 lead.

The 4th saw the Cardinals pile on three more runs after a single, hit-by-pitch and walk loaded the bases. Brendan Donovan’s two-run single and another RBI single from Contreras made it 6-1. 

The Mets chipped away with a run in the 6th after a grounder and error allowed Jeff McNeil to score.

In the 8th, Francisco Lindor’s RBI single capped a three-hit stretch that drove in two more, cutting the deficit to 6-5. JoJo Romero pitched out of a jam in the 8th, and Ryan Helsley closed it down in the 9th for the save.

Game 2: Cardinals 5, Mets 4

Tylor Megill (NYM): 5 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 6 K, 3 BB

Game Summary

Alec Burleson put the Cardinals ahead early with a two-run homer in the 1st, scoring Nolan Arenado.

The Mets answered with a four-run 3rd inning behind a string of singles from Tyrone Taylor, Starling Marte, and Francisco Álvarez, taking a 4-2 lead. In the bottom half, Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn drew walks before Arenado and Contreras delivered back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at 4-4.

Victor Scott II made a highlight-reel play in the 4th, robbing Juan Soto of a potential three-run homer with a leaping grab at the wall. 

The eventual game-winner came in the 6th when Yohel Pozo singled and scored on Scott’s RBI double to center.

Michael McGreevy, recently recalled from Triple-A Memphis, shined in relief—throwing 5.1 scoreless innings, striking out five, walking one, and retiring the final 10 batters he faced.

Interesting To Note: The Cardinals have yet to see a home run from the designated hitter spot this season. Both Contreras and Burleson’s home runs came while playing first base.
