Jordan Walker has a small but mighty sample size against Wednesday’s starter for the Chicago Cubs, posting a home run and a walk in two career plate appearances, but the St. Louis Cardinals outfielder won’t get his crack at lefty Matthew Boyd in the matchup at Busch Stadium.
That’s because Walker hit the injured list on Wednesday with an unfortunate designation after being diagnosed with appendicitis.
Walker’s stint on the 10-day IL is retroactive to June 23. Right-handed hitting utility man José Fermín was recalled by the Cardinals to take Walker’s place on the active roster. Fermín has posted a robust .913 OPS with a .308 batting average this season with Triple-A Memphis.

Additionally, the #STLCards have:

The other move of the day was less surprising, as Michael McGreevy was returned to Memphis after another spot start on Tuesday. The Cardinals have managed a pseudo six-man rotation during this stretch in June with few scheduled team off-days, but swapped out McGreevy against, as expected, with reliever Matt Svanson before Game 3 of the team’s series against the Cubs on Wednesday.
The right-handed Svanson has a respectable 3.95 ERA in 13.2 Major League innings this season, while managing a 3.57 ERA across 17.2 innings at Triple-A.
