Cards, Orioles Meet In Baltimore
The St. Louis Cardinals open a three-game series this afternoon in Baltimore against the Orioles in a Memorial Day matinee.
These are two teams heading in opposite directions. The Redbirds are 16-6 this month, while the Orioles are the exact opposite at 6-16.
Redbirds Winning Tight Games
The Cards are coming off a weekend series sweep of the Diamondbacks in which they won all three games by a single run. After starting the season 0-5 in one-run games, the Cardinals have turned that around to improve to 10-8 in that category.
Erick Fedde makes the start looking to rebound from a loss to Detroit in his last start where he gave up 4 runs in 5 innings. Fedde has been very good away from Busch Stadium this season with a 2.43 road ERA.
Orioles Off To Awful Start
It has been a massively disappointing start to the season in Baltimore. The Orioles are 16 games under .500 after winning 91 games a year ago, and the main culprit has been their pitching. Baltimore’s team ERA of 5.52 ranks 29th in baseball.
Today’s starter Charlie Morton has been a significant contributor to Baltimore’s pitching woes with a 7.68 ERA. Stunningly, the Orioles are 0-12 when Morton appears in a game. He is returning to the starting rotation after being shipped to the bullpen, and he has pitched better of late with just 2 runs allowed and 12 strikeouts in 9.1 innings covering his last 3 appearances.
My Pick
I’m not going to overthink this one. I think there is good value on the Cardinals today. As my co-host Shawn Surwillo on Domesticated Gamblers likes to say, sometimes when you’re hot, you’re hot. And when you’re cold, you’re cold - and that’s what we have with these teams today.
Fedde has been solid in the vast majority of his starts, and I expect him to do his job today and give the Cardinals a chance to win. Even if Morton can turn things around and have a competitive start, I like the Redbirds to do some damage in the late innings. Baltimore’s bullpen ranks 27th in MLB with a 5.46 ERA.
Maybe this is a trap, but I’m willing to walk into it. Give me the Redbirds to continue their winning ways.
Pick: Cardinals on the moneyline at -118 on DraftKings (bet to -125)
