Cardinals Look To Break Out Brooms
The St. Louis Cardinals go for the sweep this afternoon when they meet the Milwaukee Brewers in the series finale at Busch Stadium.
After losing their first five one-run games of the season, the Cards broke that string with one-run wins on both Friday and Saturday, highlighted by Nolan Arenado’s walk-off home run yesterday.
Can Fedde Keep It Rolling?
Erick Fedde makes the start for the Cardinals after pitching 6 innings of 2-run ball in a no-decision in Atlanta in his last outing. The right-hander has posted three consecutive quality starts and is 4-for-5 in that category this season.
Fedde has continued to get good results despite having a worrisome 13 strikeouts and 14 walks in his 27 innings. A big reason for Fedde’s success has been that opponents have just a .194 batting average against him this season.
Cards Face Former Teammate
Jose Quintana will be on the bump for the Brewers this afternoon. The left-hander has been dynamite in his first three starts of the season with just 2 runs allowed in 18.2 innings.
The former Cardinal has enjoyed a lot of success at Busch Stadium in his long career. Quintana holds a 2.89 ERA in 12 career starts at Busch.
My Lean
I was high on Fedde heading into the season and still am overall.
I’ve also been a big fan of Quintana’s for a long time from playing fantasy baseball. I’m also still mad at Oli Marmol for taking Quintana out in Game 1 of the 2022 playoffs against the Phillies.
So I’m actually going to stay away from this game because I know I’m biased. I love these pitchers and want to take the first five under, but looking at their underlying numbers, both Fedde and Quintana have regression written all over them.
Fedde has a 3.33 ERA but an expected ERA (xERA) of 5.02. Quintana holds a sparkling 0.96 ERA, but his xERA is 4.55. It’s only a matter of time until one (or both) of them has a blowup start.
Also taking into account the Cardinals have heavily used their big guns in the bullpen the last two days, we could see some runs late. So if forced to make a bet on this game, I’d throw a dart on the over.
