Cardinals, Red Sox Play Twin Bill

The St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox will play a day-night doubleheader today to wrap up their series at Fenway Park.

Yesterday’s game was rained out after the Sox took the series opener 13-9 on Friday. The win was the third in a row for Boston, while the Redbirds have dropped three of their last four games after a 3-0 start to the season.

Game 1 Preview

Andre Pallante will be on the mound for the Cardinals in Game 1 after earning the win in his first start of the season against the Twins. He went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Sean Newcomb was originally scheduled to pitch Sunday night, but he has been moved up to take the ball in Game 1 for the Red Sox. The left-hander has struggled against the Cardinals in his career with a 10.13 ERA in 8 games. Current hitters on the Cards’ roster have hit a combined .333 (9-for-27) with 4 home runs against Newcomb, with Nolan Arenado taking him deep twice and Willson Contreras and Lars Nootbaar each homering off him once.

Game 2 Preview

Miles Mikolas gets the nod in the nightcap for the Cardinals after pitching well in his season debut by allowing just 2 runs in 5.1 innings against the Angels. Mikolas has faced the Red Sox at Fenway one other time in his career, and it was also on Sunday Night Baseball. He pitched 6 innings of one-run ball in a Redbird winner back in 2023.

Boston’s starter for Game 2 is TBD.

My Leans

I do not like betting doubleheaders because there is too much unknown with funky lineups and unpredictable bullpen usage. And after going 23-15 (60%) for +7.05 units in my first 38 picks writing for Sports Hub STL, I’m not going to force a pick if I don’t have a strong feeling. If you want to be profitable long-term in sports gambling, it's important to be selective and not bet every game.

If forced to bet on these games, I’d take the over 9 in Game 1 because both offenses are swinging the bats well right now. Pallante is not a big bat-misser, and Newcomb is a mid-level pitcher who has been knocked around by the Cardinals in his career.

Then for Game 2, I would bet the loser of Game 1 to bounce back and earn a victory in the nightcap. I view these teams as very even, so I think a split is the most likely outcome we’ll see today.

Lean for Game 1: Over 9 at -112

Lean for Game 2: Loser of Game 1 to win Game 2
