We finally got to see the new version of St. Louis CITY SC live on our screen, and we’re not just a week away from getting to see them in-person when the season opens this weekend versus the Colorado Rapids.

In that first live look at Olof Mellburg’s CITY squad eagle-eyed fans were quick to jump on the formation change for the Swede’s first preseason game as manager. His history with an odd-man defensive line immediately perked ears up when he was announced as CITY’s 2nd Full-Time Head Coach and it was confirmed in that first game that CITY, primarily a 4-man defense in its first two seasons, will be utilizing three-center backs throughout 2025. (Barring injuries, I’m sure)

We already covered what those changes have looked like through the first ~270 minutes of preseason soccer. Now it’s time to ask a more specific question: How will this new formation affect the biggest contributors for CITY SC?
