In the Calder Cup Playoffs, regular-season statistics quickly fade into irrelevance. The postseason is entirely about who steps up under the bright lights, and right now, the St. Louis Blues’ AHL affiliate is riding an electric wave of momentum. Tied 1-1 in their Atlantic Division Final series against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the Springfield Thunderbirds return home to the MassMutual Center on Tuesday, May 19th. If they hope to take a command of the series, they will continue to lean on the two explosive difference-makers carrying them through May: goaltender Georgi Romanov and forward Dillon Dubé.

Possibly the most stunning storyline of the Thunderbirds’ postseason has been the play of Romanov. The 26-year-old netminder had a difficult and inconsistent regular season, adjusting to a new organization after signing with the Blues last fall. In 28 regular-season appearances, Romanov posted a modest 9-12-3 record with a 3.29 goals-against average (GAA) and a .896 save percentage (SV%).

Once the playoffs arrived, however, Romanov flipped a switch and has become a brick wall. He currently has the AHL's fourth-best GAA at a 1.64 and the fourth-highest save percentage at .947. Behind his stellar play, Springfield has secured six postseason wins, the second-most of any goaltender in the league. Romanov has been resilient in this stretch, including a Game 2 performance where he stopped 39 of 42 shots to give the T-Birds a chance to complete an unforgettable comeback win in overtime.

While Romanov holds down the defensive zone, Dubé is providing the heavy-artillery offense. Dube was among the most productive skaters for the Thunderbirds during the regular season, lighting up the AHL with 20 goals and 37 points in just 46 games. Despite missing a chunk of time, he still finished fifth on the team in scoring and third in goals during the regular season.

That regular-season production was just a prelude to his playoff takeover. Dubé has been an absolute force for Springfield, sitting 11th among all AHL skaters with seven postseason points and tied for 6th with four goals in nine games. He’s driving the play every time he steps on the ice, leading all Thunderbirds with 26 shots on goal. Dubé proved to be the catalyst in a chaotic Game 2 when he put the team on his back, scoring two goals with the goalie pulled in the final minutes of regulation to erase a 3-0 deficit and force overtime.

The Thunderbirds showed immense heart by stealing Game 2 on the road, turning what looked like a commanding series lead for the Penguins into a brand-new, best-of-three battle. With the series shifting back to Springfield, the T-Birds hold the home-ice advantage. If Romanov stays locked in and Dubé continues to dictate the pace of play, the MassMutual Center crowd could be treated to a special victory on Tuesday night.
