The Missouri Tigers look to keep on rolling when they travel to Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners tonight.
The Tigers are 6-2 over their last eight games and look to be heading to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years under head coach Dennis Gates.
The margins are thin in sports, and if one result would have gone differently, Mizzou would be squarely on the bubble heading into this matchup instead of solidly in the field - and that one result that stands out is the 88-87 overtime win over Oklahoma back on January 24th in Columbia.
That was the game that featured a deep three-pointer by Trent Pierce at the buzzer to force overtime, followed by another buzzer-beating 3 by Mark Mitchell in OT to turn a two-point loss into a dramatic one-point victory.
I think that loss will definitely be on the minds of the Sooners as these two teams get ready to square off again.
You’ll hear a lot of times in sports gambling the phrase “the revenge angle”. Sometimes that’s a load of malarkey, but in this case, I think it has some merit because you have an Oklahoma team motivated and playing hard down the stretch despite being out of the race for the NCAA Tournament.
The Sooners are playing some of their best basketball of the season and have gone 4-2 over their last six games, highlighted by a road win at Vanderbilt during this stretch. They’ll be itching to get another crack at Missouri, and they’re certainly capable of lighting up the scoreboard with an offense that ranks 21st in the country in efficiency according to KenPom - that’s 25 spots higher than Mizzou.
This game won’t make my card tonight with how well the Tigers are playing right now, but my gut tells me Mizzou is due for a dud after playing an A+ game at Mississippi State this past weekend. I think the Tigers are headed to the Big Dance no matter what happens these next two weeks, but I look for them to take a small step back tonight down in Norman.
