The Missouri Tigers begin their SEC schedule on Saturday night at home against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
The Tigers are 3-0 and putting up Greatest Show on Turf type numbers in terms of yards and points.
The Gamecocks have been unimpressive with a 2-1 record and will be looking to bounce back after getting crushed by Vanderbilt 31-7 and losing their quarterback LaNorris Sellers to an injury during that game. Sellers is listed as probable for Saturday night as of the time of this writing.
But I don’t think that it’s going to matter whether or not he plays.
Even with Sellers, I don’t think South Carolina can score enough to keep up.
The Gamecocks’ offense just has not looked in sync this season. They scored only 17 offensive points against a bad Virginia Tech team that just fired its coach this week. Then the Gamecocks played a blood donor in South Carolina State and put up only 253 yards of offense. And then of course last week, they did essentially nothing against Vanderbilt.
Missouri’s offense on the other hand is incredibly explosive with weapons all over the field. If Vandy can score 31 on this South Carolina defense, I fully expect the Tigers to at least match that - and I’m not sure the Gamecocks can score more than 20.
I’ve heard from some talking heads this week that these Mizzou/South Carolina games are always close - but that’s not accurate. Sure, last year’s game was a thriller and went down to the wire. But the two years before that, Mizzou took care of business with wins by scorelines of 34-12 and 23-10.
Look for the Tigers to win this one by double digits, move to 4-0 against the spread, and bring the fan excitement to another level.
