Chiefs, Giants Desperate For A Win

A pair of winless teams meet on Sunday Night Football when the Kansas City Chiefs hit the road to take on the New York Giants.

The Chiefs are 0-2 for the first time since 2014, as their nine-year stranglehold on the AFC West appears to be in jeopardy.

Chiefs Can’t Go 0-3… Can They?

While the Chiefs are 0-2, panic should not be setting in. Both losses have come by one possession, so part of the reason for this winless start in my opinion is simply regression to the mean after they ran unsustainably hot in close games for quite a while now.

But this is about the time Andy Reid’s teams tend to kick it into high gear. The Chiefs are just 13-13 ATS in Weeks 1 and 2 during Reid’s tenure in Kansas City. But in Weeks 3 and 4, that record improves to 16-7-1 ATS - including 9-3 in Week 3.

Can Russ Keep Cooking?

The Giants are coming off a heartbreaking 40-37 overtime loss at Dallas last week. Their offense showed out in that game with Russell Wilson throwing for 450 yards and Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson combining for over 300 receiving yards. However, I wouldn’t expect New York to have as much success throwing the ball this week against a Kansas City pass defense that ranks 9th in the NFL.

The Giants have also really struggled in this primetime spot in recent years. Since 2019, they have a dreadful 2-19 record in night games.

My Lean

Both teams are going to be playing desperate football here to avoid falling to 0-3. But one team has been the premier franchise in the NFL in recent years, while the other has been mostly a punch line.

I’m not sure the Chiefs have the horses this season to defend their AFC West crown and make another Super Bowl run, but on this night, look for Wilson to come back down to earth and the Chiefs to make enough winning plays to cover the spread and get their season back on track - and they better… because Lamar Jackson and the Ravens come to Kansas City next week.

Lean: Chiefs -6 at -110 on DraftKings
