Cards, Reds Play Game Two

The St. Louis Cardinals look for a third straight win when they take on the Cincinnati Reds tonight.

The Cards took the series opener 7-5 in 10 innings last night to hand Cincinnati its fourth straight loss. The Cardinals have won five of the eight meetings with the Reds so far this season.

McGreevy Makes Start

The Cards should be feeling confident with Michael McGreevy on the mound tonight because wins have come in bunches when he pitches. The Cardinals are now 12-3 in games with McGreevy appearances in his career.

The right-hander has now gone 6 innings in five straight starts. McGreevy also has a 3.00 ERA on the road this season and a 3.30 ERA when pitching at night like he will be here on Saturday.

Abbott Seeks Bounceback

The Reds counter with Andrew Abbott, who is looking to rebound from a rare rough outing. The left-hander was hammered for 7 runs (6 earned) and 8 hits in just 4 innings in his last start at Arizona, causing his ERA to rise from 2.28 to 2.62.

Abbott has been lights out at home this season with a 2.01 ERA in 13 starts. He has also confounded Cardinals hitters in two starts against them here in 2025 with 1 earned run allowed on 7 hits in 11 innings of work.

My Lean

It has typically been winning time for the Cardinals when McGreevy pitches, but they are up against a tough customer tonight in Abbott. Maybe he’s starting to wear down as he approaches a career high in innings pitched, but I think it’s more likely than not Abbott bounces back with a good start tonight.

I’m also getting a gut feeling that the Cards fall short in this one, as they haven't been able to play consistent winning baseball over the last couple months. The Cardinals haven’t won three games in a row since a three-game sweep of the Guardians from June 27-29.
