Let’s Play Two In Chicago
The St. Louis Cardinals will play their sixth doubleheader of the season when they take on the Chicago White Sox in a pair of games today at Rate Field. Last night’s game was rained out after the Redbirds took the series opener 12-2 on Tuesday.
The Cards are 6-4 in their ten doubleheader games this season, including sweeps over the Reds and Mets, splits with the Phillies and Royals, and a doubleheader loss to the Red Sox. Of those ten games, six went over the total, three went under, and there was one push.
Game 1 Preview
Former White Sox hurler Erick Fedde will make the start for the Redbirds in Game 1. Fedde was fantastic for Chicago in 2024, going 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA before being dealt to the Cardinals at the trade deadline. He was particularly effective at Rate Field where he went 5-2 with a 1.87 ERA in 9 starts last season.
Last night’s scheduled starter Sean Burke will stay on course for the White Sox and pitch Game 1. The right-hander had a run of three straight quality starts come to a crashing halt in his last outing at Houston. The Astros roughed up Burke for 7 runs and 8 hits in 3.2 innings.
Game 2 Preview
The Cardinals are going to hold Sonny Gray back for the weekend against the surging Cincinnati Reds and instead turn to Michael McGreevy in Game 2 today. McGreevy last appeared for the Cards on June 8th, giving up 4 runs in 6 innings against the Dodgers. He pitched 6 shutout innings in his last start at Memphis on June 14th, and overall this season at Triple-A, McGreevy is 7-1 with a 2.51 ERA.
Mike Vasil will be on the mound for the White Sox in Game 2. The right-hander has been effective in a Steven Matz-like hybrid role for Chicago this season. Vasil has a 1.99 ERA in 45.1 innings covering 20 appearances, but he is due for big-time regression with a 4.88 xERA, 4.56 FIP, and 5.11 xFIP.
My Pick(s)
I typically do not like betting doubleheaders because of too much unknown with odd lineups and unpredictable bullpen usage, but I’m not going to pass up an opportunity to bet against the White Sox, who are losers of six straight games.
In a situation like this, I approach it with the opinion that I don’t think the Cardinals will get swept today. So I’m going to take the Cards -1 at -117 in Game 1. If they win the game, I’ll take my profit (or a push if they win by one run) and call it a day.
If the Cardinals lose Game 1, I’m going to take them at -1 at -137 in Game 2. I like the pitching matchups for the Redbirds in both games, in particular against the White Sox who have scored just 13 total runs during their current six-game skid.
Pick for Game 1: Cardinals -1 at -117 on DraftKings
Game 2: Pass if Cardinals win Game 1. If White Sox win Game 1, I will take the Cardinals -1 at -137 on DraftKings in Game 2
