Cards Coming Off Terrible Loss

The St. Louis Cardinals look to rebound from arguably their worst loss of the season when they meet the Kansas City Royals tonight in the second of a three-game series at Busch Stadium.

The Redbirds blew a five-run lead in last night’s 10-7 loss to Kansas City, marking their third defeat in the last four games.

Big Start For Mikolas

It’ll be Miles Mikolas on the bump tonight for the Cards. He was not sharp in his last start, as he allowed 4 runs on 9 hits in 4 innings in a no-decision at Baltimore.

The poor outing snapped a streak of eight consecutive starts where Mikolas permitted 3 earned runs or less. The veteran right-hander was terrific back on May 17th against the Royals with 6 shutout innings with just 2 hits allowed, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts.

Can Cameron Keep It Going?

The Royals counter tonight with Noah Cameron, who has been lights-out in his four starts this season. The left-hander has a 1.05 ERA covering 25.2 innings in his four appearances.

Cameron matched up with Mikolas in Kansas City in that May 17th game and was the tough-luck loser in a 1-0 Cardinals win where the only run came off a Jordan Walker home run.

My Pick

I think this is an important start for Mikolas, who has been so good most of the season. Was his last start at Baltimore an aberration? Or is the regression underway that so many of us have been expecting?

This is more gut than anything, but I think Mikolas will come through tonight with a competitive start. And I think the time has come for Cameron to come back down to earth. The Cardinals will be seeing him for a second time tonight, which I think will give them an advantage.

Cameron only has 16 strikeouts in his 25.2 innings, so it’s not like he is overpowering and blowing hitters away. And with a career 3.90 ERA in the minors, I think we start to see tonight that Cameron is not the second coming of Sandy Koufax.

The Cardinals have shown the ability to bounce back from tough losses this season, and I think they do it again tonight. I’ll take the Redbirds at -1 at +112 on DraftKings. That means if the Cards win by one run, this bet is a push.

Pick: Cardinals -1 at +112 on DraftKings (bet to +100)
