Fedde Tosses First Career Shutout as Cardinals Dominate Nationals 10-0

The St. Louis Cardinals (20-19) erupted offensively and rode Erick Fedde’s shutout pitching to a 10-0 win over the Washington Nationals (17-22) on Friday night. Fedde tossed the first complete game by a Cardinals pitcher since Jordan Montgomery’s 2022 gem, giving the team its sixth straight win and pushing them above .500 for the first time since April 6.

Scoring Recap

1st Inning 

Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn opened the game with back-to-back walks, and Nolan Arenado followed with a single to load the bases. Willson Contreras then ripped a two-run double to left, giving the Cardinals an early 2-0 lead.

3rd Inning 

Brendan Donovan doubled and later scored on a sac fly from Iván Herrera—just activated off the injured list—making it 3-0.

4th Inning 

Pedro Pagés doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Victor Scott II sacrifice fly to left field. The Cardinals led 4-0 through four innings.

5th Inning 

Arenado notched his third single of the game, and Contreras followed with another base hit. Herrera doubled in Arenado for his second RBI of the night, and Jordan Walker drove in Contreras with a sac fly to right, stretching the lead to 6-0.

8th Inning 

Walker was hit by a pitch, Pagés and Scott II drew back-to-back walks and Winn singled to score a run. Pagés later scored on a wild pitch by Lucas Sims. After another walk to Donovan, Contreras worked a bases-loaded walk to score Scott II, pushing the score to 9-0.

Arenado made a beautiful diving play at third base to get Fedde's first out of the inning.

9th Inning 

Walker and Pagés walked again, and Scott II grounded into a fielder’s choice. A throwing error by shortstop CJ Abrams allowed Walker to cross the plate for the final run of the night.

Fedde's Gem

Despite allowing a single in the ninth, Fedde stayed in the game and induced a double play from Nathaniel Lowe to get out of the jam. It was the first Cardinals complete game since Montgomery's shutout of the Cubs on Aug. 22, 2022, and Fedde now joins Nathan Eovaldi (TEX) and Michael King (SD) as the only pitchers with shutouts this season.

Willson Contreras extended his on-base streak to 21 games, hitting .366 with 15 RBIs during that stretch.

Cardinals starting pitchers have allowed just 1 run over their last 23 innings, combining for 11 hits, 4 walks and 24 strikeouts.

St. Louis moves to 5-13 on the road.
