Blues’ Road Trip Continues
The St. Louis Blues play the third of a five-game road trip on Saturday afternoon against the New York Islanders.
These teams split their meetings last season with the Blues notching a 1-0 win in St. Louis and the Islanders answering with a 3-1 victory in New York.
The OT Woes Won’t Stop
The losing streak is up to four games for the Blues after Thursday’s 3-2 overtime loss in Philadelphia. One positive is that the Blues have picked up a point in three of the four defeats on the current streak, but they have let too many opportunities pass by with an 0-6 record in overtime games this season.
Overall over the last nine games, the Blues’ record is 3-2-4, which is the same number of points as if they went 5-4-0. So while it certainly looks dire right now, depending on your perspective, the recent performance isn’t quite as bad as it feels.
Islanders Rolling
The Islanders are back on home ice on Saturday after just wrapping up a terrific seven-game road trip. They went 6-1 on their travels, with the only loss coming to the team with the best record in the league in the Colorado Avalanche.
The Islanders’ offensive attack has been very good this season, as their 3.29 goals per game ranks 8th in the NHL
My Pick
I’m inclined to fire a bet on the Islanders here at a playable price. New York is surging right now, and the Blues just keep finding ways to lose games.
Much like the Thursday game against the Flyers, this should be a tight matchup with a low total of 5.5. But if the game is tied at the end of regulation, the Blues are going to be feeling the pressure with these overtime woes just continuing to exacerbate.
A moneyline pick is based on the full game - not just regulation. So until the Blues can find a way to turn around their fortunes in 3-on-3 and in shootouts, it’s appealing to keep fading them in tightly contested matchups.
