With their chances of keeping their AFC West crown all but gone, the Kansas City Chiefs turn their attention to making a push to qualify for the postseason - and they have another tough test on Sunday when they host the 8-2 Indianapolis Colts.
The Chiefs continue to sit outside the playoff picture after last week’s 22-19 loss at Denver dropped them to 5-5. Not only are the Chiefs in 9th place in the AFC, but they are likely going to be in trouble with tiebreakers with a 1-2 division record, 2-4 conference record, and head-to-head losses against the Bills and Jaguars, who currently occupy the final two AFC playoff spots.
The .500 record for Kansas City is not a case of this team falling apart; rather, it has been regression to the mean in close games. The Chiefs went 11-0 in one-possession games last season on their way to another Super Bowl appearance, but they are 0-5 this year in one-score games.
The Colts come to Kansas City off their bye with the #1 scoring offense in the NFL (32.1 points per game) and the league’s leading rusher in Jonathan Taylor. Taylor has racked up 1,139 yards on the ground with a league-high 15 rushing touchdowns, and he is a heavy favorite to win the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.
But Indianapolis may be starting to show some cracks with Daniel Jones looking more pedestrian at quarterback recently. In the Colts’ last two games, they lost 27-20 at Pittsburgh and had to survive to beat a poor Atlanta team 31-25 in overtime.
Quite simply, this is a spot where I want to have my money on Patrick Mahomes. I was wrong on the Chiefs last week, but I’m going to give them another shot because I just cannot see them losing at home to fall under .500 - but if they do lose this one, it’s panic time for Chiefs fans.
I don’t love the number at 3.5, so the way I’m getting at this game is taking the Chiefs on the moneyline and parlaying it with the Lions on the moneyline against the Giants. The Lions lost at Philadelphia last week, but in their last 13 games coming off a loss, Detroit is a perfect 13-0 straight up and 13-0 against the spread.
Put the Chiefs and Lions together, and you get a much more palatable price of -141 rather than the current Kansas City moneyline price of -185.
Pick: Chiefs/Lions moneyline parlay at -141 on DraftKings (bet to -150)
