Cards, Mariners Wrap Up Series
The St. Louis Cardinals hope to avoid a sweep tonight when they close their series with the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
The Redbirds’ bats have fallen silent over the last couple weeks, as they have scored more than 4 runs just twice in their last 14 games.
Cards Turn To McGreevy
Michael McGreevy makes the start tonight looking to bounce back from one of his worst outings as a big leaguer. The right-hander got knocked around by the Giants for 6 runs on 9 hits in just 4 innings this past Friday.
McGreevy has been a road warrior this season, going 4-0 with a 2.70 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 5 starts away from home. He has also pitched better at night (3.83 ERA) than during the day (7.56 ERA) this season.
Mariners Streaking
The surging Mariners have won four in a row to pull within one game of the Astros for first place in the AL West. They also hold the final AL Wild Card spot by 1.5 games over the Rangers.
It’ll be Logan Gilbert on the mound tonight for Seattle. The right-hander has been dominant at home this season with a 2.15 ERA in 11 starts. Gilbert also carved up the Cardinals the only previous time he faced them, twirling 8 innings of 2-run ball with just 2 hits allowed, 1 walk, and 10 strikeouts last September at Busch Stadium.
My Lean
This is the time of the season where you often see teams right in the thick of the playoff race kick it into high gear, while non-contending teams are essentially on cruise control trying to get to the end of the season. See the current winning streaks of the Red Sox, Mariners, Rangers, and Guardians as examples.
I think that’s what we have seen in the first two games of this series, and I expect that’s what we'll see again tonight.
The Mariners are playing with passion and urgency, while the Cardinals have not met Seattle’s level in the first two games. I expect McGreevy to battle tonight, but look for Gilbert to dominate and the Mariners to cover the run line for a third straight game.
Lean: Mariners -1.5 at -105 on DraftKings
