Cards, Pirates Meet Again

The St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates play the third of their four-game series tonight at Busch Stadium.

Pittsburgh won last night’s game 8-3 and now leads the season series over the Redbirds 6-5.

Sonny In St. Louis

It has been rough going for tonight’s St. Louis starter Sonny Gray since the All Star break. He has notched only 2 quality starts from his 7 outings and has posted a 6.75 ERA during that stretch.

Gray has pitched well against Pittsburgh this season with a 2-1 record, 2.45 ERA, and 0.66 WHIP in 3 starts. He is also backed by a Cardinals offense that has contributed to the over going 8-1-1 over the last 10 games.

Pirates Swinging The Bats Well

Gray is facing a Pittsburgh team that is in good offensive form with 32 runs scored over the last 5 games. The Pirates have won 5 of their last 6 and are 19-14 since July 21st.

Carmen Mlodzinski will start the game for Pittsburgh. The right-hander won’t go very deep, as he has pitched 2 innings or less in 7 of his last 9 appearances. But Mlodzinski is on a good run right now with just 3 earned runs allowed over 20.2 innings in those 9 games.

My Pick

Not only does this total seem a half-run too low to me, I’m also surprised to see the under with more juice than the over.

I’ll take the bait and would recommend a small play on the over. Cardinals games have been over festivals lately, Gray has been shaky for over a month now, and both offenses have been swinging the bats well recently.

Even if Mlodzinski continues his strong run, I think the Cards can do some damage against a Pittsburgh bullpen that ranks 19th in MLB in ERA.

Pick: Over 7.5 at -101 on DraftKings (bet to -110)
