Cards, Marlins Square Off In Miami

A pair of struggling teams get together tonight when the St. Louis Cardinals travel to face the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three-game series.

The Redbirds are riding a five-game losing streak, while the Marlins have dropped 10 of their last 14.

Liberatore Looking For Length

Tonight’s starter Matthew Liberatore is looking to get back on track. The left-hander has not been able to get to 5 innings in any of his last five outings, as he appears to be wearing down in his first full season as a starter. During that stretch, Liberatore has pitched 19.2 innings and permitted 13 earned runs on 29 hits with 7 walks and just 8 strikeouts for a 5.95 ERA and 1.83 WHIP.

Going back to May 30th, Liberatore has a 5.46 ERA in 12 starts.

Pérez Solid For Marlins

The Marlins counter with Eury Pérez, who has been excellent this season with a 3.58 ERA and 0.98 ERA in 60.1 innings. The right-hander had a six-start stretch between July 3rd and August 2nd where he was nearly untouchable with just 4 earned runs allowed in 34 innings (1.06 ERA).

However, Pérez has experienced some regression over his last couple outings. He was roughed up for 9 runs in 10.1 innings in his most recent starts against the Braves and Guardians.

My Lean

I’m a little surprised to see this total at only 7.5 with two starters that haven’t been at their best lately. But the argument for the low total is that Pérez has outstanding numbers overall, and the Marlins have really struggled against lefties this season with a .637 OPS that ranks 27th in MLB.

This is just a lean for me and not a bet, but if you’re looking for some action tonight, the over would be the way I’d go. The Cardinals actually swung the bats decently this past weekend against the Yankees - it was the pitching that was the issue. And the Marlins are coming off a good week offensively, as they scored 31 runs in their six games.

Lean: Over 7.5 at -113 on DraftKings
