Cards Hope To Avoid Another Series Loss To Colorado

The St. Louis Cardinals look to avoid some embarrassment this afternoon when they meet the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game set at Busch Stadium.

The Redbirds and Rockies have split the first two games, and if the Cards fall short today, they will have lost both series this season to what will likely end up being one of the worst teams in the history of baseball.

Cardinals Need To Get Bats Going

The Cardinals are just 10-14 since the All Star break, and the offense is a huge reason for that. The Cards have scored an MLB-worst 77 runs since the All Star break - that’s 11 runs fewer than the next lowest team.

Michael McGreevy will be on the bump today seeking his third straight win. The right-hander is coming off 6 shutout innings against the Cubs in his last outing to improve to 4-2 on the season and 7-2 for his big league career. When McGreevy has pitched in a Cardinals uniform, the club has a record of 10-2 in those games.

Gomber Returns To Busch

The Rockies won via shutout last night for just the second time since May 15, 2024. Both of those shutout victories have come against the Cards within the last three weeks.

Former Cardinal Austin Gomber will be Colorado’s starter today. The left-hander has endured a brutal season with a 6.52 ERA, and the Rockies are 2-8 in his 10 starts. Gomber has struggled against his former team with a 6.89 ERA in 7 career games (5 starts) against the Cardinals.

My Lean

The Cardinals should win this game. They should win it comfortably. But I don’t want to back them here because the bats have just been so quiet.

If you’re going to bet this game, I’d actually take a shot on the first five under. If the Redbirds couldn’t hit Chase Dollander or Kyle Freeland, they certainly could get held down by Gomber. McGreevy looks to be settling into a groove as a regular MLB starter. And you also have the nice situational spot of this being a weekday afternoon game with the Rockies flying home after the game and the Cardinals getting to enjoy a day off tomorrow.

Lean: Under 4.5 in the first five innings at -110 on DraftKings
