Cards, Rockies Play Game Two
The St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies continue their series on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.
The Redbirds took the opener on Monday in dramatic fashion with Brendan Donovan providing the game-deciding hit in the 8th inning of a 3-2 win. The victory pulled the Cards to within 3 games of the Mets for the final NL Wild Card spot.
Cardinals Mashing Lefties Lately
The Cardinals will be facing a left-hander on Tuesday in Kyle Freeland, and that’s good news for the Redbirds at least as of late. They entered Monday’s action with an .843 OPS against lefties over the last 30 days, ranking second in MLB during that stretch.
The Cards will have a left-hander of their own on the mound in Matthew Liberatore. In his three starts since the All Star break, he has permitted only 4 earned runs in 12.2 innings (2.84 ERA). Liberatore hasn’t exactly been sharp however, as those 12.2 innings include 16 hits allowed, 5 walks, and just 5 strikeouts.
Rockies Beyond Awful Against Lefties
As dreadful as Colorado’s season has been with a 30-88 record and a .254 win percentage, it has been even worse against lefties. When the Rockies face a left-handed starter, they have an almost impossibly bad record of 4-28 - that’s a .125 win percentage.
Freeland has been poor this season with a 5.53 ERA, but he’s been competitive (kind of?) on the road this year with a 4.75 ERA and 1.25 WHIP.
My Pick
I have not been impressed at all by Liberatore since the All Star break, but you couldn’t ask for a better matchup than facing the Rockies in your home ballpark. I think Libby will take a good step forward on Tuesday night.
The Rockies had their chance to win on Monday, but they blew it to see their losing streak extend to eight games. The Cardinals couldn’t cover the -1.5 run line on Monday, but I’m going to run it back on Tuesday and take the same bet. That Colorado record of 4-28 against lefties jumps off the page, so I’ll bank on the Redbirds winning by multiple runs here.
Pick: Cardinals -1.5 at -103 on DraftKings (bet to -110)
