The St. Louis Cardinals continue their six-game West Coast swing tonight when they face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second of a three-game series.
The Redbirds won the opener in LA 3-2 last night to pull even at 2-2 on the road trip. Tonight the Cards will be aiming to win back-to-back games for just the second time since June 29th.
Mikolas Struggles Against Good Teams
It’ll be Miles Mikolas on the mound tonight for the Cardinals. The veteran right-hander has put together consecutive good outings, as he hurled 5 shutout innings against the Padres on July 25th followed by 6 innings of 2-run ball against the Marlins this past Wednesday.
However, Mikolas has not fared well this season against teams currently in playoff position like the Dodgers. He has a 7.60 ERA in seven starts against teams currently in line to make the postseason, and the Cards are 1-6 in those games.
Sheehan Starts For LA
Emmet Sheehan gets the call for LA this evening. The right-hander hasn’t gone deeper than 5 innings in any of his six appearances this season, but he has been effective with a 3.60 ERA and a 3.31 xERA.
The Cardinals will need to be careful with Freddie Freeman, who is 12-for-24 (.500) over the last week. The future Hall of Famer has hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games, going 20-for-52 (.385) in that stretch. Freeman is also 8-for-18 (.444) with 3 home runs lifetime against Mikolas.
My Pick
This feels like a clunker spot for Mikolas. He has had major struggles against good teams, and the Cardinals haven’t shown any consistency lately to string together back-to-back wins.
Sheehan has quietly been effective for the Dodgers, so I expect him to outduel Mikolas in this one before the game gets to the bullpens. I’m taking LA to win and Freeman to record at least one hit.
