Cards, Marlins Play Rubber Game

The St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins will decide the winner of their three-game series tonight at Busch Stadium in the teams’ final game before the trade deadline.

The Marlins shut out the Redbirds 5-0 last night behind Sandy Alcantara and three relievers. Miami’s bullpen has posted an excellent 2.34 ERA over the last 30 days, ranking 2nd in MLB during that span.

Mikolas On The Mound

It’ll be Miles Mikolas on the mound tonight for the Cards. The veteran right-hander is showing signs of being in the midst of a good stretch, as he has pitched shutout ball in two of his last three starts - with both of those outings coming at Busch Stadium.

Mikolas has had an up-and-down year, but it has mostly been up at home. He has a 3.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 9 starts at Busch this season. Mikolas has permitted more than 3 earned runs just once in those 9 outings.

Quantrill Looking Solid

Tonight’s Miami starter Cal Quantrill is similar to Mikolas in that the overall numbers don’t look very good, but he gives his team a chance to win more times than not. Quantrill had an awful March/April, but since the beginning of May, he has a 3.82 ERA while allowing more than 3 earned runs only once in 14 starts.

Quantrill has enjoyed great success against the Cardinals in his career with a 0.56 ERA in 5 games (2 starts).

My Lean

I’d be cautious betting this game because it looks like there’s a good chance weather can cause a delay(s) or potentially a postponement, but my lean is the under.

I could see this game script being something similar to the weekday afternoon getaway day game situational spot where I usually like targeting the under. Both teams will be traveling for weekend series, and with weather threatening the game, we may see some quicker at-bats as they try to get the game in.

I tend to think Mikolas and Quantrill can be effective here as outlined above, and both bullpens are in very good form.

Lean: Under 8.5 at -104 on DraftKings
