Cards Conclude Road Trip
The St. Louis Cardinals wrap up their six-game road trip today in Colorado against the Rockies.
The Redbirds have gone 1-4 so far on their current travels, including last night’s ugly 8-4 loss that included Erick Fedde getting drilled for 6 runs in just 3 innings of work.
Pallante Gets The Start
The Cardinals have made many frustrating pitching decisions lately (see Fedde), but I do think lining up Andre Pallante to start today’s series finale makes a lot of sense. In a park like Coors Field where the ball flies, Pallante’s skill of keeping the ball on the ground should play well today.
Pallante has a groundball rate for the season of 61.6%, which is by far the best on the starting staff. He has a very small sample size of pitching at Coors, but in 2 encouraging relief appearances, he has tossed 3 shutout innings with just 1 hit allowed and 3 strikeouts. Pallante has dominated the Rockies in his career with a 0.68 ERA in 13.1 innings covering 6 games (1 start).
Rockies’ Starter TBD
As of the time of this writing, the Colorado starter is officially listed as TBD. Hopefully we see a lot of the Rockies’ relievers today, as their bullpen ranks 27th in MLB with a 4.95 ERA.
The Rockies have struggled to string wins together this season. They have one four-game winning streak and one three-game winning streak. Other than that, they have won back-to-back games just twice all season long.
My Pick
To update the numbers I listed in yesterday’s article, the Cardinals have a 5-15 record in Fedde starts. Say the Cards had another pitcher make those starts and went 10-10. Their record would be 57-45 and they’d currently be holding a Wild Card spot.
This is a pretty good team, but the Cards are seemingly headed towards sell-off mode next week in large part because management refused to address a pitching staff in need.
I’m not saying Pallante is Cy Young, but I do think he is better positioned than most pitchers to be effective at Coors Field. I expect him to at least be serviceable today.
The Rockies winning consecutive games has been a rare occurrence this season, so here’s thinking the Cardinals’ bats have a good day and roll to victory.
Pick: Cardinals -1.5 at -125 on DraftKings (bet to -130)
