Cards Head To Denver
The St. Louis Cardinals hope to get their season back on track when they open a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.
The Redbirds were swept in Arizona over the weekend, falling to 4-11 over their last 15 games.
McGreevy Gets The Call
The Cards are bringing up Michael McGreevy from Triple-A Memphis to start this game and give Matthew Liberatore some extra rest. While McGreevy has mostly impressed in his time in the big leagues, he is not coming into this start in good form. In his last two outings at Memphis, he has pitched 8 innings and gotten hammered for 15 runs (14 earned) on 15 hits with 3 walks and 3 home runs allowed.
The Cardinals are also in their unfavorable split on Monday facing a left-handed starter. They have a 16-19 record against southpaw starters this season.
Revenge Game For Gomber
It’ll be former Cardinal Austin Gomber on the mound for the Rockies. He has not fared well against his former team with a 6.67 ERA covering 27 innings in 6 games (4 starts). Gomber has not thrived in the high altitude, as he has compiled a 5.16 ERA in 59 career games at Coors Field.
The Rockies are flirting with potentially having the worst season in MLB history, but they came out of the All Star break playing well by taking two of three against the Twins.
My Lean
The Cardinals should win this game. They need to win this game. They probably need to sweep this series in order to keep their playoff hopes alive and avoid turning into sellers at the trade deadline.
But it sure feels like this season is falling off the rails, doesn’t it?
I don’t trust the Cardinals enough to put my money on them here. I’d feel more confident if McGreevy was rolling right now, but his recent form is concerning.
If forced to make a play here, I’d take the over with two untrustworthy starters and a Rockies bullpen that entered Sunday’s action with a 4.97 ERA (27th in MLB).
