Cards Close Out First Half

The St. Louis Cardinals look to avoid a sweep when they face the Atlanta Braves in the first half finale today at Busch Stadium.

The All Star break appears to be coming at a good time for the Redbirds, as they are limping to the season’s unofficial halfway point with a 3-8 record in their last 11 games.

Gray Looks To Be The Stopper

The Cardinals turn to their ace Sonny Gray to be the stopper once again to avoid a losing streak. The Cards are 14-4 with Gray on the mound this season, and dating back to the start of 2024 when he joined the team, they have a record of 31-15 in Gray starts.

The right-hander has also been particularly dominant at home with the Cardinals. Gray is 15-6 with a 2.80 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 27 starts at Busch Stadium.

Braves Hope To Finish Strong

The Braves have picked themselves up off the mat to take the first two games of this series. They came to St. Louis losers of 11 of their last 14 games, but Sean Murphy has carried them to two wins with 3 home runs and 6 RBI in the first couple games. He’s in the lineup batting cleanup today.

Right-hander Davis Daniel has been called up from Triple-A Gwinnett to make the start today. He is 5-7 with a 3.52 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) in the minors this season with 60 strikeouts covering 76.2 innings.

My Lean

This certainly feels like a game the Cardinals should win with their ace on the hill against a team with a minor league starter. Plus the Braves should be pretty content having won the series already, and the Cards are desperate for a victory.

So I definitely lean the Cardinals to win, but the threat of storms this afternoon is keeping it off my Sunday card. Most of this handicap is based on Gray, but it would not stun me to see a rain delay today that makes this an abbreviated start for him.

If you’re adamant on betting this one, I think the Cardinals -1 is the best way to go.

Lean: Cardinals -1 at -123 on DraftKings
