Cards Go For Split
The St. Louis Cardinals attempt to earn a split of their four-game series with the Brewers when the two teams meet this afternoon in Milwaukee.
The Redbirds ended a six-game slide with an 8-5 win yesterday with a new look at the top of the lineup, as Oli Marmol gave the slumping Lars Nootbaar a breather. Today’s game will feature a new look as well with Nootbaar getting a second straight day off.
Donovan Is Back!
I feel like I got an extra Father’s Day gift today when I pulled up the Cards’ lineup and saw Brendan Donovan in the leadoff spot for this game. He is good to go after being out since Tuesday with his toe injury. Donovan could very well be headed for the All Star Game after putting up an outstanding season so far with a .310 batting average and .819 OPS.
The Cardinals are hoping today’s starter Miles Mikolas will snap out of his recent funk. Over his last three starts, Mikolas has allowed 13 runs on 26 hits with just 7 strikeouts in 15 innings - that’s a 7.80 ERA with a WHIP of 1.80.
Priester On A Roll
Quinn Priester will be on the mound today for the Brewers. The right-hander has been on a roll of late with three quality starts in his last four outings. Over his last seven starts, Priester has pitched very well with an ERA of 2.35.
However, one of his few poor outings this year was back on April 25th in St. Louis. The Cardinals pounded Priester for 5 runs and 8 hits in 5 innings in a 6-5 Redbird win.
My Lean
I’m worried the “bad” Mikolas is back and here to stay. Normally I’d be trying to find a way to back the Brewers, but my reads have been off lately. I’ve been cold gambling over the last couple weeks, so I’m going to sit this one out and essentially take a timeout today to reset.
If forced to make a bet on this game, my brain is telling me to bet the Brewers. But my brain and the numbers I typically look at haven’t been producing winning bets lately. So I’m going to pivot and take the Cardinals as my lean.
I loved seeing the fight and response from the Cards in yesterday’s game, and I have a feeling they’ll have another good offensive day in support of Mikolas. Despite his recent struggles, Mikolas should be heading to the mound at American Family Field with some good vibes. In 11 career games at this park, he is 8-2 with a 3.08 ERA.
Lean: Cardinals on the moneyline at +118 on DraftKings
