CITY Go For Sweep Of Galaxy
The teams with the two worst records in the Western Conference get together this afternoon at Energizer Park when St. Louis CITY SC host the LA Galaxy.
These two clubs met back on March 9th in LA, with CITY coming away with a 3-0 win in arguably their best performance of the season.
Right Process, Wrong Result For CITY
CITY was unable to get a result last week in the second game under caretaker manager David Critchley. After beating San Jose 2-1 in the initial “new manager bounce” game, CITY fell at Portland 2-1 last Sunday.
However, there were many encouraging signs in that game. According to Sofascore, CITY generated 2.57 expected goals (xG) on 18 shots and 7 big chances. Their big problem was finishing - which is obviously an extremely important problem. But if CITY can continue to create those opportunities, it’s reasonable to expect good things will happen moving forward.
Dreadful Season For LA
It has been an absolute nightmare season for LA. The Galaxy are the defending MLS champions, yet they have the worst record in the league with only 1 win to go along with 12 losses and 4 draws.
The Galaxy got the monkey off their back in their last game, as they finally earned their first win in a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake. LA is winless on the road this season with 7 losses and 2 draws.
My Pick
I think the Portland game was a classic case of “right process, wrong result” for CITY. I was encouraged by the level of play (minus the finishing), and I think they can replicate that today against the team with the worst record in the league.
Assuming CITY can carry over that style of play to today’s game, I expect variance to go their way at home and for some balls to find the back of the net.
I’m comfortable taking CITY on the moneyline at +100 because LA isn’t just failing to get wins this season - they are failing to get results in losing over 70% of their games. With the Galaxy tied for the most goals allowed in MLS with 36, look for a fun afternoon at Energizer Park.
