Cards Hope To Bring Out Brooms
The St. Louis Cardinals will try to move to a season-high nine games over .500 when they meet the Los Angeles Dodgers in the finale of their three-game series this afternoon.
The Redbirds will be going for the sweep and hope to extend LA’s run of mediocre play. The Dodgers are just 15-17 over their last 32 games.
McGreevy Makes His Return
Michael McGreevy makes his much-anticipated return to a big league mound today. The right-hander has done nothing but impress during his time with the Cardinals, compiling a 4-0 record with a 1.57 ERA and 0.70 WHIP in 5 career MLB appearances covering 28.2 innings.
McGreevy dominated the Mets in his only other big league appearance of 2025. He pitched 5.2 shutout innings with just 1 hit allowed, 1 walk, and 5 strikeouts. In the minors this season, McGreevy has a 6-1 record with a 2.78 ERA.
Cards See Kershaw One More Time
It’ll be a blast from the past when Clayton Kershaw toes the slab for the Dodgers today. The future Hall of Famer is arguably the best starting pitcher of this generation, but the Cardinals have given Kershaw some of the most painful moments of his career. In his last four playoff starts against the Cards, he is 0-4 with a 7.15 ERA.
Kershaw is 24 strikeouts away from 3,000 K’s for his career, but he is laboring to reach that milestone - which leads me to my pick for today’s game.
My Pick
I’m focusing on Kershaw for my pick because as great as he has been in his career, it appears he is just about cooked with age and injury having taken their toll.
Kershaw has a 5.17 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 15.2 innings this season with just 8 strikeouts and 9 walks. And if you look deeper, it gets even worse. There is a stat called HardHit%, which measures the percentage of batted balls with an exit velocity of 95 MPH or higher. Kershaw’s HardHit% against this season is 52.8% - by far the highest mark of his career.
I’ve watched two of Kershaw’s starts live this season. Balls are routinely getting hammered, and it has often felt like a stroke of good fortune if he escapes an inning without getting scored upon. He has been lucky to have a 5.17 ERA, as his expected ERA (xERA) is 5.79.
Maybe Kershaw can turn back the clock today and put on a good performance at what has been a house of horrors for him in Busch Stadium, but at plus money, I’m willing to back the Cardinals to score at least 3 runs off him in the first five innings.
Pick: Cardinals over 2.5 runs in the first five innings at +114 on DraftKings (bet to +100)
