The St. Louis Cardinals go for yet another series win when they face the Texas Rangers in the finale of their three-game set this afternoon.
The Redbirds are 8-1-1 in their last ten series in large part because they have turned things around on the road. The Cards started the season 2-12 away from home, but they’ve gone 12-5 on the road over their last 17 games.
Fedde On The Mound
The Cardinals send Erick Fedde to the hill today. The right-hander hasn’t produced great results over his last two starts with 7 earned runs allowed over 10 innings. However, Fedde’s stuff looked good in his last outing at Baltimore, as he tied a season-high by generating 14 swings-and-misses.
Fedde has performed well on the road this season with a 2.86 ERA in six starts, including a 1.42 ERA over his last five outings away from home.
deGrom Day For Texas
The Rangers counter with two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom. The right-hander has been healthy to begin the season and has been mostly dominant per usual, as deGrom has allowed 2 runs or less in each of his last eight starts.
It has been particularly difficult for teams to do damage against deGrom at Globe Life Field. He has a 1.71 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in his seven home starts this season.
My Pick
I think this game is ripe for a first five under. It’s an earlier start than usual, it's a getaway day for both teams, and I think we have two starting pitchers set up for success.
deGrom has been particularly filthy early in games, as his opponents have averaged just 1.18 runs scored in the first five innings of his starts.
And this is more gut feel, but I just don’t see Fedde having three lackluster starts in a row. His stuff was much better last time out, and if he can get close to replicating that today, Fedde should be able to produce good results against a Texas lineup that has struggled to score all year long.
The under 4.5 in the first five innings is juiced at -140, so I’m going to pair it with both teams to score in the game to bring it down to +100.
