Cardinals Complete Sweep with 4-3 Win Over Diamondbacks

The St. Louis Cardinals (30-23) wrapped up a three-game sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks (26-27) on Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 victory at Busch Stadium. It marked the team’s fourth series sweep of the season and their first time being seven games over .500 since the end of the 2022 season.

STL: Sonny Gray (5-1, 4.06 ERA) – 6.0 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 0 BB

ARI: Brandon Pfaadt (7-3, 3.90 ERA) – 5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 1 BB

Scoring Summary

1st Inning 

Arizona jumped ahead quickly as Ketel Marte singled, followed by a Josh Naylor double to put two in scoring position. Eugenio Suárez then drove in both with a two-run single to center to give the D-backs a 2-0 lead. 

In the bottom half, Brendan Donovan doubled to right and came around to score on Iván Herrera’s RBI single, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

3rd Inning 

Masyn Winn tied the game at 2-2 with a 397-foot solo shot to left, his sixth homer of the year.

6th Inning 

Arizona briefly reclaimed the lead as Suárez doubled and scored on a Pavin Smith RBI single, making it 3-2. 

The Cardinals responded in the bottom half as Winn walked, moved to third on a Donovan single and scored on Herrera’s sacrifice fly to right to tie the game once again at 3-3.

7th Inning 

Jordan Walker singled, advanced on a groundout by Pedro Páges and scored the go-ahead run on Victor Scott II’s RBI single to right, giving the Cardinals a narrow 4-3 lead.

9th Inning 

With closer Ryan Helsley unavailable, Phil Maton was called on in the ninth. He worked around a double and a hit batter to seal the win, aided by Nolan Arenado, who made a tough catch on a foul popup, crashing into the netting.

Game Notes

All three games in the series were decided by one run (4-3, 6-5, 4-3).

Willson Contreras missed his third straight game with back spasms but hopes to return Monday.

Sonny Gray delivered the Cardinals’ 10th quality start in May (Gray 3, Mikolas 2, Liberatore 2, Pallante 2, Fedde 1).

Standings Update 

Despite the sweep, the Cardinals remain two games back of the NL Central-leading Cubs, who beat the Reds 11-8 on Sunday.

Cardinals ML (-125) barley hit for the third straight game and the total stayed UNDER 7.5 (-105). Eric Sontag’s NRFI pick fell short as both teams combined for three runs in a busy first inning.

St. Louis begins a six-game road trip Monday, starting with a three-game set against the Orioles in Baltimore. Erick Fedde is scheduled to start Game 1, with first pitch at 2:05 p.m. CT.
