CITY, SKC Renew Rivalry
St. Louis CITY SC and Sporting Kansas City renew their rivalry tonight at Energizer Park when the two clubs square off for the second time this season.
Sporting KC won the first meeting 2-0 back on April 5th in Kansas. These are two very similar teams from a results perspective, as both clubs have 10 points and a -5 goal differential this season.
CITY Desperate For A Win
The winless run is now up to eight games for CITY in MLS play after their 2-1 defeat to San Diego FC this past Saturday. They have six losses and two draws during this stretch
The defense that was CITY’s strength early in the season has regressed lately. Starting with that 2-0 loss to SKC, they have now allowed two or more goals in five of their last six league games.
Sporting KC Playing Better Lately
Sporting Kansas City fired their longtime manager Peter Vermes after five losses and a draw in their first six MLS games of the season, and they have improved since the change with a 3-3 record over their last six matches.
Only three teams in the league have conceded more goals this season than Sporting KC, but they are currently in good form defensively after allowing just one total goal over their last two games.
My Lean
I’ve had a pretty good read on CITY lately with a 5-2 record betting their last seven MLS games, but I’m very conflicted on what to do with this one.
The most logical play in my opinion is to take the under on CITY’s team total of 1.5 goals, which is priced at -110 on DraftKings. I referenced Sporting KC’s good defensive form above, and SKC also shut out CITY once already this season.
But I just have a feeling this is the night where CITY breaks through. I could see this being the “kitchen sink game” for CITY, which means this is the game where they throw everything at their opponent and finally get rewarded.
But if they don’t win this game, it could be rough sledding for the next month. Three of their next four games are on the road, and all of them are against teams that are currently in playoff position.
I’ll be sitting this one out, but if forced to make a pick, I tend to bet more on logic than gut. I’d be on the CITY team total of under 1.5. CITY has scored two or more goals just twice in their twelve MLS games this season, as finishing has been a huge problem for this club all year long.
Lean: St. Louis CITY SC team total under 1.5 goals at -110 on DraftKings
