St. Louis CITY SC came to an anticlimactic scoreless draw with Colorado Rapids at Energizer Park, sharing a point in the standings in Olof Mellberg's first match as head coach after being favored in the odds.
CITY came out strong, with forward Simon Becher leading the charge in the offensive third. Becher had two promising chances, with one goal ruled out for offside and another denied in spectacular fashion by Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffan. Becher's near misses were part of a broader theme: strong attacking play with a lack of clinical finishing. With an xG of 1.86, CITY showed they were the better side offensively, but the inability to capitalize on chances ultimately reminded of a bad taste left in the mouths of fans from 2024.
Defensively, St. Louis were strong in front of the ball, limiting the strong Colorado attacking core to essentially no real opportunities, as reflected by a mere 0.20 xGA and 2 shots--neither of which on goal. Expectedly, St. Louis dominated in the air at a 68% aerial duel win rate over a smaller Rapids team.
St. Louis also lead in possession with 54%, a stat that may become a trend in the coveted "CITY 2.0" system. Passing accuracy sat at a very strong 81%.

There were a few notable absences from the matchday squad: Joakim Nilsson and Rasmus Alm. Head coach Olof Mellberg revealed in the post-match presser that both suffered injuries at the tail end of preseason, and are not expected to be sidelined for long.
Cedric Teuchert and Chris Durkin are also expected to be at 100% for next weekend's fixture against expansion side San Diego FC; both were featured in the match day squad, and Teuchert played the final 10 minutes of the match after returning stateside from acquiring his green card in Germany.
New signing Conrad Wallem also made his debut, though he saw limited action. Midfielder Akil Watts, however, made a strong case for a starting role, especially in the defensive midfield position. His performance could put pressure on Durkin once he is fully recovered.
Additionally, Célio Pompeu and Tomáš Ostrák were named to the matchday squad for the first time since suffering season-ending injuries in 2024. While neither featured in tonight's tilt, their return to the fold offers a hopeful sign for the future.
While the scoreless draw will leave fans wanting more, Olof Mellberg’s CITY 2.0 system showed plenty of promise for the 2025 MLS campaign.
